Start touring real estate brokerages
If your goal is to become a full-time real estate agent – or to eventually upgrade yourself to real estate broker – you’re going to need to spend some time working in a brokerage. So, step one is to start making contacts! Your real estate school may be able to arrange tours on your behalf, with brokerages they know, or you may have to start cold-calling and trying to impress more established brokers.
Either way, you’ll want to make meetings, take tours, and look for brokerages you think you’d enjoy working for. Try to tour both larger and smaller operations – their corporate cultures will be quite different.

Pick a brokerage
If you want to become a real estate broker, you’ll need to work for a brokerage for roughly two years – so pick one you think you’ll like! If you choose a larger brokerage, you probably won’t get as much work, but you’ll make tons of contacts. A smaller operation, on the other hand, will give you more to do, but it may be of a more limited scope.

Start marketing yourself
They don’t teach marketing at real estate schools, but perhaps they should. Your ability to self-promote will in large part determine how well you do at the brokerage, and in your career overall. Buy nice business cards. Learn the basics of online marketing and Search Engine Optimization. Build a website. Establish social media accounts. You might even consider taking out ads in local publications or radio if it’s affordable.
