Taking the Next Step in a Real Estate Career
Most people are familiar with real estate agents and property managers, but not everyone knows that becoming a Managing Broker is another step they can take in their real estate career.
A Managing Broker is a higher-level licensee with more responsibilities within a brokerage. For agents who have gained experience and are thinking about what comes next, becoming a Managing Broker can be one path to career advancement.
Passing the Managing Broker licensing examination is an important step, but the process does not end there. Candidates also need to complete the Managing Broker Applied Practice Course, which can take around six to eight months.
Benefits of Becoming a Managing Broker
Becoming a Managing Broker can offer several professional and financial benefits. Many Managing Broker positions provide a competitive base salary, which may offer more predictable income than relying mainly on commission-based sales.
Depending on the brokerage, a Managing Broker may also receive benefits such as reduced or zero desk fees, performance bonuses, profit-sharing opportunities, or other forms of compensation. These arrangements vary from one brokerage to another, but they can make the role financially attractive.
The position can also provide valuable leadership experience. Managing Brokers may supervise licensees, help improve brokerage procedures, provide training, address compliance concerns, and contribute to important business decisions. The experience can lead to other opportunities, such as becoming a brokerage owner, senior manager, trainer, compliance professional, or industry advisor.
For experienced agents and property managers who enjoy leadership, problem-solving, and helping others succeed, becoming a Managing Broker can be a meaningful next step in their careers.
Working Through the Course Materials
Completing the course took a lot of time and effort. Over eight months, I worked through the materials and spent time making sure I understood the key concepts.
There was a lot of information to cover, and some topics needed more time and review than others. Rather than simply trying to remember everything, I found it more helpful to focus on understanding the material and work through it consistently.
The same approach can be helpful when preparing for the Managing Broker examination. Regular study, practice, and going back to difficult topics can make the amount of material feel more manageable.
What Completing the APC Can Mean for Your Career
Some agents may worry that even after passing the Managing Broker exam, finding a Managing Broker position could still be difficult.
This is where completing the six-to-eight-month Applied Practice Course can make a difference. Having the APC completed can strengthen a candidate’s resume when applying for Managing Broker opportunities.
For an employer, hiring a junior Managing Broker who still needs several months of training can take additional time and resources. A candidate who has already completed the APC may be more attractive because an important part of that training has already been completed.
For agents considering this career path, completing the APC is not only about meeting a requirement. It can also help show potential employers that you have already put in the time and effort to prepare for the role.
Helping Others Prepare
I also help real estate professionals prepare for the final Managing Broker licensing examination through our courses and tutoring program.
We help students work through the course materials, understand key concepts, and spend more time on areas they find difficult. Being able to ask questions and go through challenging topics can make the preparation process easier to manage.
Going through this learning process myself has also reminded me how much time and effort students put into their studies. Staying consistent, asking questions when something is unclear, and focusing on understanding the material can make a real difference along the way.
I am grateful to have completed the Managing Broker Applied Practice Course and to have been part of its inaugural cohort. For real estate professionals thinking about the next stage of their careers, becoming a Managing Broker is one path worth considering.
